My opponent took a card but it wasn't shown in their hand when they knocked. Why?

When a player knocks, the last card they discarded to the pile is not shown to their opponent. This is in accordance with the official rules of gin rummy. For this reason, it could be that a player picks up a card during the round and, without openly discarding it again, this card is not part of their hand at the end of the round.
